Anyone Remember No 14
A really tough one this month. Anyone remember or indeed know anything about John Collins, a Scot, who was pressed into service at Wimbledon on June 3, 1963.
Based at Stanmore, Middlesex, John had experience of second half rides at Aldershot and New Cross in the late 1950s. He had gone to Plough Lane, Wimbledon, to watch the ‘Dons’ ride in a National League fixture against Belle Vue, but the home side were a man short, with Gil Goldfinch missing, and John was asked to ride on a strange bike and in borrowed leathers.
Not surprisingly he failed to score and never featured again.
