I like – Ted Dexter, perfectly tuned motors, taking the dog for a walk and eight hours kip a night

Favourite food- cream cakes

I like drinking – brown ales with bags of froth

Best moment in Speedway – getting a place in Yarmouths first team in the Provincial League

And worst moment – the only time I rode at Wigan in 1953. I was outgated by Peter Moore and Frank Malouf and belting round trying to catch them. I hit the fence and spun around about half a dozen somersaults and ended up in the fence. I fractured my ankle and the bike went careering off and demolished the starting gate.

Ambitions -  to ride in the World Final at Wembley
