Anyone Remember No 7
Anyone remember Ronnie Radford's epic goal for Hereford against Newcastle in 1971. Its thought by many to be the most famous goal in the FA Cup. May be, may be not. It was shown extensively on TV news in February following football commentator John Motson's passing. Mottie reckoned it made his career .
However it led to the demise of speedway at Barrow. The Bluebirds were in Division Three in the late 60s, briefly topping the table in the 1968/69 season but were relegated in 1970 and, after finishing bottom of Division Four in 1971 and 1972 had to apply for re-election, there being no automatic relation out of the four division set up in these days. While they were successful in the first occasion, they lost out to Hereford in the second election. This was ascribed to their far flung geographical location, Hereford coming to prominence following their cup victory and the speedway track which encroached the playing area.
They had to agree to remove the speedway track before they would be accepted into the Northern Premier League, a tier five set up.
May be if Radford hadn't scored the Bombers would have continued at Holker Street.
