Dunoon Speedway
A contemporary report
“An alarming accident in which Glasgow racing motorcyclist, James M McArthur, chemist, 24 Gorebridge Street, Carntyne was injured, occurred during the dirt track racing at the sports field held in connection with the Dunoon Cattle Show last Saturday afternoon. During the second heat of a four lap race four riders had just negotiated the third bend and were emerging out of a cloud of dust when McArthur who was riding on the outside near the rails crashed. Officials and spectators rushed to the injured rider who was lying unconscious beneath the rails where he was thrown and pulled him to the edge of te adjacent grassy slope. His right hand was badly gashed and was bleeding profusely and there was blood about his face. A motor car was commandeered and the injured man removed to the Cottage Hospital close by. Later that night McArthur recovered sufficiently to be removed to his home in Glasgow. An aunt of McArthur was a spectator at the accident.”
