Sixty Years Ago Today

On returning to school after our Easter holidays one of my classmates was wearing an eye catching badge and year bar which caught our attention. He was a natural salesman and regaled us with tales of Charlie Monk and speedway racing and I decided I must go to see for myself.

So on May 6, I got the train to Partickhill station and went on the nearby subway - tube for English readers - at Merkland Street to Copland Road, - these stops are now known as Partick and Ibrox - a ten minute walk to The White City in Paisley Road West..... and I was hooked! And my lie has never been the same!

Tigers roared to a 53 -25 victory over Newcastle, their biggest win of the season as it would turn out. Skipper Maury Mattingley handed Ivan Mauger his first defeat in the Northern League but couldn't repeat the feat in the Silver Sash match race.
