Personal Profiles from the Past No 4

Doug Templeton 1965

I was born – in Maybole, Ayrshire on June 18,1930

Educated – Maybole Academy

Personal Details – 5ft 10ins; 12 st 7 lbs; eyes – brown; hair - brown

First Rode Speedway – at Glasgow White City in 1953. I’d done a bit of grass tracking before that. They put me in the team but I didn’t score a point – but I won my second half ride on the track spare

I have ridden for – Glasgow (White City), Lanarkshire Eagles at Motherwell and Edinburgh

Favourite track – Sheffield and I like Exeter too

Favourite starting position – haven’t got one. Some tracks are better on the inside others favour the outside grid

I have ridden in – Scotland, Wales, Austria and Poland

I live – on my farm at Culross, Fife, just over the Forth Road Bridge

My off track occupation –  I work on my farm, a mixed farm of 224 acres

Married – yes, with three children, two girls and a boy

I like – peace and quiet, all forms of motor cycling, relaxing and open roads at night

I dislike- Exeter on rained off meetings, smoke, fog , traffic jams

Favourite Television – any cowboy programmes, Danger Man

Favourite Star – haven’t really got one, though Ive always admired Ove Fundin

Favourite food- steak done rare

I like drinking – milk stout

Best moment in Speedway – winning the Scottish Open Championship in 1962. I think I won it the year before but the opposition was a bit stiffer in 1962. I scored a maximum and felt quite pleased with myself that night

And worst moment – it hardly qualifies as one but it must be my crash with George Hunter at Edinburgh this summer. I don’t remember anything about it at all and that’s what makes it so bad. If I could remember what happened it probably wouldn’t be such a worry!

Ambitions – just to keep riding as long as possible and to score a few points, and to have a better season next year than I did in 1965
