Nine Ride Russians

The Control Board seemed keen that most NL tracks and fans should get to see the touring Russians. In the end only West Ham missed out though it could be argued that Wembley was the London meeting .Norwich staged a challenge meeting against Russia on a night when some Russians were required for a Best Pairs at Swindon , talk about spreading things thinly. The Firs saw an 18 heat meeting with the seven man Stars taking on only four Russians., who rode in alternate heats., a real test of stamina . Fundin and Nygren were virtually unbeatable, though Plchanov heading home Nygren in heat 13 was probably decisive in the visitors narrow 55-53 win.  Levai, Read and Trott were out of their depth against international opposition and barely managed a point between them in  16 rides. Probably not a great meeting and certainly the most  unusual and never repeated race formula

Four No Scores

Glasgow were at Newcastle in June 1964 and had Maury Mattingley at 2, Trevor Redmond at 3 and Charlie Monk at 5, meaning one of this trio was out in every heat other than heat 8, into which  Monk was brought as a Tactical Substitute.  Bill McMillan, Terry Stone, Bruce Ovenden and Eric Hanlin all struggled with the tricky Brough Park circuit and failed to score, leaving the Tigers with only three point scorers. Dont think this has happened before or since in a meeting that ran its full course..... unless you know differently!

Newcastle 51 Glasgow 26 ( Monk 14, Redmond 9, Mattingley 3)
