September 2024 Obituary

Malcolm Ballard

Not the archetype Eastbourne discovery, he made his debut for Eastbourne in 1971 and played a huge part in their league winning side, riding in 28 meetings and averaging well over 8.00 in the process.   In 1972 his average rose to almost 10 points per match, and he doubled up in Division One with Oxford Rebels, averaging over 6. He was selected for the Young England (Division Two) team that won a series against Sweden in 1972. In the close season he looked to leave Oxford but relented and stayed full time with the Rebels but finally moved to Poole for 1974. Although he scored well at Wimborne Road there early on, he subsequently moved to Leicester though his time there was beset with engine problems which saw him retire before the end of the season, giving the game up at the young age of 26.
