The BL's First Season - October 1965

October starts with Glasgow having their third consecutive rain off on October 1 when a three team challenge with Edinburgh and Newcastle is postponed.

The next night sees Arne Pander win the Scottish Open in Edinburgh with a 15 point maximum ahead of George Hunter and Ivan Mauger.

Glasgow run on a Thursday night when Barry Briiggs and Olle Nygren get bookings as they are due at Edinburgh the following night on Golden Helmet business. Briggs wins while Nygren finished third losing out to Sverre Harrfeldt in an unusual run off which also features Bliuey Scott and Graham Coombes who are racing for the Top Tiger prize donated by a fan, Charlie Monk is a no show and claims he will never ride for Glasgow again! However he subsequently lines up for Tigers remaining meetings. Briggs beats Nygren to retain the Helmet through the winter.

West Ham look to have tied up the BL title but Wimbledon's protest over Swindons incorrect use of Clive Hitch at reserve is upheld and they get two further league points. Hammers duly win 47-31 at Cradley to seal the title. They also take the KO Cup convincingly beating Exeter home and away. Interestingly the top four were all former NL sides - West Ham , Wimbledon, Oxford and Coventry - with Halifax fifth. This would lead to demands for a further reallocation exercise ..and one that continued for a number of years

Barry Briggs won the BLRC on a very wet night with Jimmy Gooch second and homester Cyril Maidment third.

Cradley who raced in the first league meeting of the season  have the honour of riding in the last one too losing 35-43 to Newport at Dudley Wood.

And so ended a historic year.
